Stringent approach to protect monuments: Sheila Dixit

With heritage monuments in the capital being threatened by encroachments, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today sought new rules to protect them.

She said a more practical view should be taken to solve the problem of encroachments around monuments.

"There are a lot of habitations around monuments which threaten them. New rules should be made to protect them."

Heritage conservation is a priority with the Delhi government and finance is no hurdle, chief minister Sheila Dikshit said Wednesday, adding that new rules should be framed to protect monuments.

"There will be no crunch of finance for the conservation and the preservation of our cultural heritage.” Dikshit said at an event organized by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) on Wednesday.

Keeping in mind the Common wealth Games this year, Dikshit said monuments across the city would be given a facelift and lit up.

In an effort to sensitise children to heritage conservation, INTACH has been involving young groups to clean monuments.

"Intach has also spread its wings to the northeastern states and is working towards bringing rural and urban youth together for heritage conservation and preservation,” an Intach official said.
