Solomon Islands team for Commonwealth Games

National Olympic Committee Solomon Islands yesterday unveiled the country’s 20 member contingent for the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India.

National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands (NOCSI) Chef De Mission Aldrin Bekala will be leading the contingent to the Commonwealth Games in place of Ronald Bei Talasasa who left the country this week for studies.

Bekala confirmed to star sport yesterday that twelve (12) athletes from Athletics, Boxing, Wrestling, Weightlifting and Tennis (lawn) will be representing the country.

The athletes include two (2) for boxing, four (4) for athletics, three (3) for weightlifting and one (1) for tennis.

Names of the athletes are as follows:

Athletics: Adison Alfred, James Iroga, Francis Maneouru and Chris Wallace

Boxing: Paul Kava and Benedict Telovae

Weightlifting: Jenilyn Vini, Hapilyn Iro and Brown Ramo

Wrestling: Katea Veresi and Tibana Mase

Tennis: Michael Leong.

According to Bekala he said the athletes were selected according to their performance at the recent Solomon Games as well as their performances at the international level.

“All the athletes have been selected by the NOCSI selection panel under NOCSI’s selection criteria”, Bekala the Chef De Mission said.

Bekala added that each sport will also be having their own officials who will be looking after them in Delhi.

Fujiyama will be responsible for athletics, Patrick Morris for boxing, Apollos Saeg for weightlifting, Andre Barovo for wrestling and Patrick Leong for tennis.

NOCSI president Fred Maetoloa and his Chief Executive Officer Atu Balekana will also be accompanying the contingent.

The Solomon Islands contingent will be leaving the country for India on the 29th September.

They will then meet up with contingents from Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Vanuatu, Tonga and Samoa in Brisbane before flying over to New Delhi.

Meanwhile, all confirmed athletes and sport officials are asked to meet at the NOCSI office at 12:00pm today for a brief meeting and also to sort out their passport and visas.

The Commonwealth Games is set to kick off on the 3rd of October.
